St. Louis schools are trying to regain accreditation amid much turmoil. Normandy and Riverview Gardens lost their accreditation. The Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education has taken over the Normandy School District and announced that all teachers must reapply for their jobs. Riverview Gardens is in a holding pattern as it has enough resources to continue school for a while, but uncertainty remains and its academic record is poor.

Wed, 25 Jun 2014 03:50:52 +0000 Susan Uchitelle 37445 at http://news.stlpublicradio.org Commentary: What Will The State Do For Normandy Students? Commentary: Student Transfer Legislation Is A Study In Chaos http://news.stlpublicradio.org/post/commentary-student-transfer-legislation-study-chaos
Recent national data indicate that schools are becoming resegregated and African Americans are less likely to be in integrated schools. That is why the continuation of the recent student transfer plan is so important.

The Missouri Legislature just passed a new complex, comprehensive student transfer bill, which unfortunately has so many flaws that it is likely to be vetoed by the governor. Should that be the case, the current transfer program for students from Normandy and Riverview Gardens will remain in existence until a reasonable alternative becomes law.
Wed, 21 May 2014 03:33:06 +0000 Susan Uchitelle 36295 at http://news.stlpublicradio.org Commentary: Student Transfer Legislation Is A Study In Chaos Commentary: Missouri Lags Behind On Pre-School Education http://news.stlpublicradio.org/post/commentary-missouri-lags-behind-pre-school-education
Over the years, many studies have shown the benefits of pre-school and early childhood education. Recently those studies have been re-analyzed and confirmed to be accurate and correct. Thus, many states -- whether the voters are predominantly Democrat or Republican -- have implemented pre kindergarten and early childhood education programs.
Mon, 10 Mar 2014 02:34:49 +0000 Susan Uchitelle 34041 at http://news.stlpublicradio.org Commentary: Missouri Lags Behind On Pre-School Education Commentary: Education Standards for All http://news.stlpublicradio.org/post/commentary-education-standards-all

I believe that it is vitally important for students to use critical thinking in all of their education courses as it is the essence to successful retention of knowledge since one should systematically work through any problem or challenge presented.

Mon, 30 Dec 2013 11:30:00 +0000 Susan Uchitelle 32328 at http://news.stlpublicradio.org Commentary: Education Standards for All Commentary: St. Louis’ Second Transfer Program http://news.stlpublicradio.org/post/commentary-st-louis-second-transfer-program

Because the St. Louis Metropolitan area did such an outstanding job with its first voluntary student transfer program, fortunately or unfortunately they have now been blessed with a second one. This transfer program however, entails just two suburban school districts, Normandy and Riverview Gardens, both of which are unaccredited.
