Workplace discrimination bill being blocked in Mo. Senate

A group of Democratic State Senators is blocking a bill that would redefine Missouri’s workplace discrimination standards.

Among those taking part in the filibuster are Robin Wright-Jones (D, St. Louis) and Maria Chappelle-Nadal (D, University City).  They talked about several other topics besides the discrimination bill on the Senate floor Wednesday, including America’s immigration policies.

EPA releases new online tool for mapping water pollution

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has released a new tool that allows the public to access information about pollutants that are released into local waterways.

The Discharge Monitoring Report Pollutant Loading Tool brings together millions of records and lets users search for and map water pollution.

ACLU files suit against city of St. Louis over jail records

The American Civil Liberties Union has filed suit against the city of St. Louis, asking a judge to make the city turn over jail records related to inmate grievances.

The St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports that the suit filed Wednesday accuses the city's corrections division of ignoring repeated requests over the past four months for records under the Missouri Sunshine Law.

The suit seeks an injunction forcing release of the records. It also asks the judge to find the city in violation of the law and to impose civil penalties.

Police capture alleged 'Logo Bandit'

St. Louis County police believe they have captured the serial bank robber, the "Logo Bandit."

Authorities said Wednesday that 35-year-old Bryon Gullion of Mexico, Mo. has been arrested for the Jan. 17 robbery of Jefferson Bank and Trust in Affton. Gullion is in jail on a $50,000 cash only bond. He does not have an attorney yet.

St. Louis County police spokesman Rick Eckhard said he expects Gullion to face charges for several additional bank robberies in the St. Louis area. He is suspected for robberies in Warson Woods, Kirkwood, Des Peres, Crestwood and two in Clayton.

Local researcher awarded $1.3 million to study corn genetics

The National Science Foundation has awarded a local researcher $1.3 million to study the genetics of how corn plants take up nutrients.

The ultimate goal is to reduce the amount of fertilizer needed to grow the ubiquitous crop.

Ivan Baxter, a U.S. Department of Agriculture research scientist and assistant member at the Donald Danforth Plant Science Center, will lead the research.
