Kirkwood, MO – Residents of suburban Kirkwood might soon have to pay more if they have more garbage.
The city has hired a Cincinnati company to study the possibility of a pay-as-you-throw policy, where householders would pay for trash based on what they throw out.
R.W. Beck Incorporated will study the best and most economical way for the city to reduce its solid-waste management costs. The city is paying Beck $40,000 and an additional $15,00 for each one-day meeting the city requests.
St. Louis, MO – A new report shows the St. Louis region fares poorly in many socioeconomic areas when compared with other metropolitan areas. The East-West Gateway Coordinating Council report finds the region's slow job and population growth lags behind many cities that compete with St. Louis for residents. The council's Blair Forlaw notes that disparity between blacks and whites in terms of housing opportunity and infant mortality continues to be a significant problem.
Jefferson City, MO – Missouri First Lady Lori Hauser Holden will unveil Missouri's quarter design Friday. Voters had until noon Thursday to cast their ballot and more than 216,000 Missourians participated in the voting process online. Others voted using traditional paper ballots at the capitol. The chosen design will be delivered to the U.S. Mint Friday.
East St. Louis, IL – A Kentucky company says it plans to build a $54 million energy plant in East St. Louis.
The coal-fired plant would bring 25 news jobs to the city. East St. Louis City Council members tentatively agreed last week to earmark more than $2 million in tax-increment financing funds for the plant, which would be built near the city's border with Sauget.
Jefferson City, MO – Missouri Secretary of State Matt Blunt has formally certified the results of the 2002 midterm election. The action clears the way for Senator-elect Jim Talent to take office, but precisely when that will happen is still unclear.
Blunt says a letter signed by Governor Bob Holden has been sent to the US Senate affirming the results of the election, including Talent's victory.
