St. Louis, Mo. – The federal government has settled a major case against St. Louis-based Sara Lee Bakery Group for damaging the world's ozone layer.
Sara Lee purchased several companies in 2001 including Earthgrains, which was the target of the suit. It has agreed to pay a $5.25-million civil penalty and to convert its industrial refrigeration units to systems that do not deplete the ozone layer.
But Sara Lee spokesman Matt Hall says the company admits no wrongdoing.
St. Louis, MO – A major blood supplier to St. Louis has temporarily closed its doors. The Gateway Blood Association, which supplies blood to about 30 area hospitals, says it's more than a $1.5 million in debt.
The group is asking hospitals to help fund a bailout plan. For now, hospitals in Missouri under contract with Gateway will get blood from Davenport, Iowa. Illinois hospitals under contract are receiving blood from Springfield, Ill.
St. Louis' MetroLink light rail system is marking its 10th anniversary Thursday. MetroLink now stretches 38 miles from Scott Air Force Base to Lambert Airport. Construction is underway on a new $550 million extension from Forest Park to Clayton and Shrewsbury, which is scheduled to open in 2006.
