Adam Allington

Adam grew up on a cherry farm in northern, Michigan.  He holds a BA in economics from Kalamazoo College.  Adam's radio career began in 2003 at the Salt Institute for Documentary Studies in Portland, Maine. He went on to cut his teeth filing stories for Maine Public Radio. Before coming to St. Louis Public Radio in 2006 Adam was was an international journalism fellow at Deutsche Welle in Bonn, Germany.  He has regularly files features for a variety of shows and networks including NPR, PRI, Marketplace and the BBC. He was awarded a prestigious Knight-Wallace Journalism Fellowship for the 2011-2012 academic year.

St. Louis to host convention about attracting conventions

The City of St. Louis is hosting what tourism officials are calling the “Super Bowl of Conventions" this weekend.

The members of American Society of Association Executives are responsible for booking some $60 billion in convention activity annually.

All told, some 5,000 hospitality industry reps and executives will be in St. Louis from Saturday to Tuesday.  

The purpose of the convention is for those reps to try to convince 1,500 different associations to hold annual meetings in their city.

Metal trim falls from Busch Stadium; no one hurt

The St. Louis Cardinals are working with their engineer and contractor to remove ornamental metal plates from the facade of Busch Stadium.

One of the 100-pound metal plates fell 80 feet to the ground on Monday afternoon.

No one was hurt in the incident but Cardinals Spokesman Ron Watermon says the team isn’t taking any chances.

Some would say the sport of baseball looms larger in St. Louis than perhaps any city in America …with names like Musial, Gibson, and Pujols on par with Washington, Jefferson and Madison.

St. Louis is a baseball town, no question…but we’re also known for another sport involving bats, balls…but no bases.

After nearly 100 years, devotees of the St. Louis sport of "corkball" are still playing the game that time forgot.

Chappelle-Nadal: special session not the place for local control discussion

St. Louis city leaders say that returning control of the city's police department should be a priority during any upcoming special session of the General Assembly.

Speaking Wednesday, leaders of the Republican controlled state House and Senate said they didn't see any problem with passing the measure.

But not everyone is on board with that plan.  

St. Louis County Senator Maria Chappelle-Nadal has been a vocal critic of local control in the past and says it should not be part of any special session.

Nixon outlines plans for 2011 special session

St. Louis business leaders are praising a move by state lawmakers and the governor to take up a broad-ranging package of economic incentives.

Governor Nixon announced Thursday that he will call a special session in September to talk address jobs and economic development

Chief among the package is $360 million in tax incentives for Lamber-St. Louis International Airport.
