Adam Allington

Adam grew up on a cherry farm in northern, Michigan.  He holds a BA in economics from Kalamazoo College.  Adam's radio career began in 2003 at the Salt Institute for Documentary Studies in Portland, Maine. He went on to cut his teeth filing stories for Maine Public Radio. Before coming to St. Louis Public Radio in 2006 Adam was was an international journalism fellow at Deutsche Welle in Bonn, Germany.  He has regularly files features for a variety of shows and networks including NPR, PRI, Marketplace and the BBC. He was awarded a prestigious Knight-Wallace Journalism Fellowship for the 2011-2012 academic year.

Local control of SLMPD by next year

Mayor Francis Slay

According to St. Louis Mayor Francis Slay, by this time next year the city could have control of its own police force for the first time since the Civil War.

The announcement came on Wednesday in tandem with an agreement on an package of economic development incentives.

Both issues will be taken up during a special legislative session later this summer.

Slay says the agreement has cleared the way for passage of local control, which now has the backing of the Republican-controlled state House and Senate

Carnahan keeping options open for 2012

Congressman Russ Carnahan

St. Louis Congressman Russ Carnahan says he has every intention of running for congress next year despite losing his seat to redistricting.

So far the elimination of his 3rd District has done little to tamp down Carnahan’s fundraising, having brought in more than a half million dollars since January.

Without saying which district he’s looking at Carnahan says there may yet be a legal challenge to the new congressional maps, which currently favor the GOP.

MoDOT preparing to demolish Jefferson Ave. Bridge over I-64

The Missouri Department of Transportation will unveil its plans for the new Jefferson Avenue Bridge on Tuesday.

MODOT Spokeswoman Kara Price says the new bridge will be a significant upgrade over the current structure.

Former political operative Ohlsen indicted for 2008 Clayton parking garage bombing

A former St. Louis Democratic political operative has been indicted in connection with a 2008 Clayton bombing that injured a lawyer.

After nearly a three-year investigation federal attorneys are accusing Milton “Skip” Ohlsen III of trying to kill his ex-wife’s divorce attorney.  

Ohlsen is already serving time on unrelated charges for mortgage fraud and illegal possession of a firearm.

Work session on coal ash landfill issue in Franklin County tomorrow

Ameren’s 2,400-megawatt plant near Labadie, Mo. is the state’s largest coal-fired power plant.

The Board of Commissioners of Franklin County will discuss controversial changes to its zoning ordinance tomorrow.

Up for approval is permit language allowing the utility company AmerenUE to build a coal ash landfill next to its plant in Labadie, Mo.

Patricia Shuban is the Director of the Labadie Environmental Organization, which opposes any rule that would allow Ameren to store toxic substances in the Missouri River floodplain.
