Adam Allington

Adam grew up on a cherry farm in northern, Michigan.  He holds a BA in economics from Kalamazoo College.  Adam's radio career began in 2003 at the Salt Institute for Documentary Studies in Portland, Maine. He went on to cut his teeth filing stories for Maine Public Radio. Before coming to St. Louis Public Radio in 2006 Adam was was an international journalism fellow at Deutsche Welle in Bonn, Germany.  He has regularly files features for a variety of shows and networks including NPR, PRI, Marketplace and the BBC. He was awarded a prestigious Knight-Wallace Journalism Fellowship for the 2011-2012 academic year.

Ameren fields shareholder questions on impact of coal ash

Officials at Ameren took questions from shareholders about the utility company's procedures for disposing of coal ash today.

The annual shareholder's meeting was open to all Ameren investors.

Diana Oleskevich works for the Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet.  The sisters are part of a group of five institutional investors calling on Ameren to clean up their coal ash disposal procedures.

Oleskevich says Ameren's claim that its 35 coal ash storage ponds comply with current regulations does not satisfy her concerns.

St. Louis police chief Isom in running for Chicago job

St. Louis Police Chief Dan Isom.

St. Louis Police Chief Dan Isom has confirmed that he is being considered for a job as superintendent of the Chicago Police Department.

Isom confirmed to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch today that his name has been recommended to incoming Chicago mayor Rahm Emanuel.

When asked whether he would take the job if offered, Isom said he would "listen to the conversation," but that he preferred to stay in St. Louis.

Bike commuters have a new home in downtown St. Louis

The City of St. Louis has taken steps to become friendlier for bike commuters.

The new downtown St. Louis Bike Station opens on Thursday.  The project was funded through a $180,000 grant from the Department of Energy.

The project is currently administered through the Partnership for Downtown St. Louis but will eventually be handed off to Trailnet.

Maggie Campbell is the President of the Partnership for Downtown St. Louis.  She says the site will offer a full range of services for bike commuters.

Suspect arrested in beating death of immigrant

Updated at 6:01 p.m. April 20, 2011:

Police have arrested Elex Murphy of North St. Louis and are holding him without bond.

A police investigation revealed the attack was part of a game which involves unprovoked attacks on innocent bystanders.

An investigation to identify other suspects is ongoing.

St. Louis police say they have arrested an 18-year-old man in connection with the beating death of a 72-year-old Vietnamese immigrant and the assault of the 59-year-old wife.

St. Louis Public Radio breaks ground on new facility

St. Louis Public Radio and the University of Missouri-St. Louis broke ground on a new midtown facility at Grand Center today.

The new St. Louis Public Radio is being built on a parking lot currently being used by the Fox Theater.
