Adam grew up on a cherry farm in northern, Michigan.  He holds a BA in economics from Kalamazoo College.  Adam's radio career began in 2003 at the Salt Institute for Documentary Studies in Portland, Maine. He went on to cut his teeth filing stories for Maine Public Radio. Before coming to St. Louis Public Radio in 2006 Adam was was an international journalism fellow at Deutsche Welle in Bonn, Germany.  He has regularly files features for a variety of shows and networks including NPR, PRI, Marketplace and the BBC. He was awarded a prestigious Knight-Wallace Journalism Fellowship for the 2011-2012 academic year.

City Police Department Deploying Extra Resources To College Hill Neighborhood

Updated at 12:45 Thursday, Feb. 7 with arrest numbers.

The St. Louis Police Department is deploying 80 extra officers and resources to north city’s College Hill neighborhood.

The area, which borders O’Fallon Park to the west and Interstate 70 to the north, has been the site of a number of shootings recently, including three murders.

St. Louis Police Chief Sam Dotson says the department is used to this kind of “hot-spot policing,” and says the tactic has been used to great effect in other parts of the city.

St. Louis Police Department To Offer Training For 'Active Shooter' Scenarios

The St. Louis Police Department is planning free seminars for businesses and schools to receive training for an “active shooter” scenario.

St. Louis Police Chief Sam Dotson says the recent spate of high-profile tragedies across the country underscores the need for more training.

Shortly after taking over as chief Dotson met with the representatives from public and private schools to begin the process.

Antitrust Lawsuit Filed Against Anheuser-Busch InBev

The U.S. Department of Justice has filed an anti-trust lawsuit against Anheuser-Busch InBev.

The government alleges the company's plans to purchase  Mexican brewer, Grupo Modelo, would give AB-InBev monopoly power to set prices.

Bill Baer, DOJ's top anti-trust official said the removing Modelo as an aggressive competitor to Anheuser-Busch InBev would give the company too much leverage to drive up prices.

Rains Bring Relief To Drought-Weary Mississippi

Recent rains throughout the Midwest have drastically improved the drought situation on the Mississippi River.

Lieutenant Colin Fogarty is a spokesman for the United States Coast Guard.  He says the rain is good news for the barge and shipping industry.

“Over the last 24 hours we’ve seen a rise of 2 feet, over the next 72 hours we’re going to see a rise of an additional five feet,” says Fogarty.  “That’s going to bring us up to about a 4.5 foot gage at the St. Louis Harbor.”

Miners Protest In St. Louis Over Effects Of Patriot Coal Bankruptcy

Hundreds of miners from across the country protested outside of St. Louis-based Peabody Energy on Tuesday.

The miners are accusing Peabody of orchestrating a bankruptcy in order to skip out on pension and healthcare benefits owed to some 10,000 retirees and their dependents.

At the heart of the dispute is Patriot Coal Corp., which was created by Peabody as a stand-alone company in 2007.  In creating Patriot, Peabody also transferred a hefty chunk of Peabody’s outstanding pension obligations onto Patriot’s books.
