Brunner enters race for U.S. Senate

Updated 2:11 p.m. with details

The Republican race to challenge U.S. Senator Claire McCaskill in 2012 is officially a three-way contest.

John Brunner, chairman of St. Louis-based Vi-Jon, Inc.,which makes Germ-X hand sanitizer and other personal care products,  has officially entered the race.

Brunner made the announcement via a 10:45 a.m. press conference Monday. Here are his prepared remarks for you to review.

Brunner, a former Marine, describes himself on his Twitter profile and Facebook page as "a true constitutional conservative running to cut spending, balance the budget, and restore the American Dream." He has a long track record of donating to Republican and conservative causes. But he's never run for public office - which he says makes him the most qualified person to serve.

Colleagues bid farewell to April Ford-Griffin

April Ford-Griffin (center, red glasses) listens as Ald. Marlene Davis (at podium) reads a tribute resolution for Ford-Griffin. The former 5th Ward alderwoman stepped down Sept. 30 to take a job leading the St. Louis Civil Rights Enforcement Agency.

They called her "Mama Duck," for the way she tried to move everyone toward consensus.

She was a "pillar" of an alderwoman despite her short stature, a small lady with big ideas, compassionate, steady, deliberate.

That's how members of the St. Louis Board of Aldermen said farewell to April Ford-Griffin at City Hall this morning.

The Grand Lobby of the Peabody Opera House in June 2011. The venue reopens on October 1 after 20 silent years and a 14-month renovation.

On May 3, 1991, the musicians of the St. Louis Philharmonic Orchestra played the last notes of the Shostakovich Symphony No. 5 in D Minor, to bring down the curtain at the Kiel Opera House. For 20 years, the massive structure at the corner of Market and 14th Streets sat vacant, as group after group proposed unsuccessful redevelopment plans.

Tomorrow night, the curtain will rise again as Jay Leno and Aretha Franklin headline the first show on the stage of the venue now known as the Peabody Opera House.
