Extreme heat impacting blood donations

The Red Cross has issued an urgent appeal for blood donors. Nationwide, the supply is less than half of what it was when a similar appeal was issued last year.

The American Red Cross has issued an urgent appeal for blood donors.

Donations to the Red Cross are down ten percent across the country in June, and officials with the agency say the current blood supply is half the level it was last year when it issued a similar plea.

Local Red Cross spokesman Dan Fox says the extreme heat keeps potential donors away.  He says people tend to give when natural disasters strike, even though the need is year-round.

Seniority, income determining factors in new Illinois insurance law

Governor Pat Quinn's office announced early this morning that he has signed a measure that will require retired state and public university employees to kick in more money for their health insurance. 

Retirees with at least 20 years of service currently get free health coverage. Those with less time on the job pay for a portion of the cost.

Road rage victim calling for charges against shooter

The attorney for a motorcyclist who was shot in a near-fatal case of road rage is asking the St. Charles County prosecutor to reconsider filing charges.

Robert Pedroli says the use of deadly force against his client, Keith Randell under the so-called “Castle Doctrine”, was never justified.

Pedroli is asking St. Charles County Prosecutor Jack Banas to reconsider his decision not to charge the shooter.

Ranch welcomes 28 Budweiser Clydesdale foals

Foaling season at Warm Springs Ranch in Cooper County is over, and there are 28 new members of the Budweiser Clydesdale family to show for it.

Two colts - Danny and Arnold - were the last two babies born at the ranch this year. Supervisor John Soto says the two are "almost twins" - they share a father and were born within minutes of each other,  inspiring Soto to name the foals after the 1988 movie "Twins."
