St. Louis, MO – Social service advocates are asking Missouri Governor Jay Nixon to make cuts elsewhere.
The Democrat asked state departments to come up with 60 million dollars in cuts.
The Department of Social Services and the Department of Health and Senior Services have recommended a combined 25-million dollars in cutbacks to their departments.
Bradley Harmon works in children services and is the president of the State Workers Union. He says one million Missourians are on food stamps more than ever before.
"Our level of demand is incredibly high already, so we're very afraid of what happens when $25 million of our general revenue dollars go away," Harmon said.
Harmon says programs like the Crisis Nursery and foster care programs will be affected if the cuts go through.
Governor spokesman Scott Holste says the governor has not made a final decision.
And Holste says the governor wants to maintain core services while dealing with lower-than-expected revenues.
