After Contentious Summer, School Starts in St. Louis

St. Louis – Some 29,000 students returned to the St. Louis Public Schools for the start of classes Monday.

After a turbulent summer of budget cuts, school closures and heated protests, it was perhaps the most scrutinized opening day in the history of the district.

Many in the community watched the first day for signs of the tone it would establish for the entire school year. Others used the day as a platform to voice their grievances against the school system.

KWMU's Kevin Lavery prepared this report.
