St. Louis – The House Armed Services Committee heard testimony Tuesday from the two top members of the 9/11 Commission.

The hearings focused largely on how intelligence operations impact the military.

Missouri Republican Congressman Todd Akin serves on that committee. He says many of the commission's findings are issues his committee reported on years ago.

Akin says one change that might help make intelligence operations more efficient could come from Congress itself.

"The committee who is tasked with the oversight of a given area should also control the funding or the financing of that particular thing," Akin said. "And that's not always the case here in Congress."

The U.S. intelligence community is funded at $40 billion a year.

The Department of Defense receives about 80 percent of that total.
