Aldermen call for death penalty moratorium

By Bill Raack, KWMU

St. Louis, MO. – The St. Louis Board of Aldermen went on record today in favor of a moratorium on the death penalty in Missouri.

The board unanimously approved a non-binding resolution calling on the state to put an end to executions and for a commission to study the use of the death penalty.

Margaret Phillips with the group, Missourians To Abolish the Death Penalty, says St. Louis is the 150th municipality to pass such a resolution

"We are trying to get a long list of these," Phillips said. "We think that a long list showing interest and support from communities all across the country, we think that shows how public opinion is going in our direction."

Executions in Missouri are currently on hold because a federal judge has ruled that the state's death penalty procedures are unconstitutional.
