St. Louis – St. Louis Board of Aldermen approved a bill Friday that would create a ballot measure giving city voters the option of keeping their current form of government.
The board voted 20 to 4 in favor of the bill, which would give voters the chance to preserve the status quo.
Sponsor Tom Bauer says his bill is designed to counter efforts by the group Advance St. Louis to amend the city charter to allow for some offices to be appointed. Bauer says that would strip residents of their right to vote.
"Their proposal would be asking the people of St. Louis to vote one time to give up the right to vote for all times on the county officers," said Bauer.
A city spokesman says St. Louis mayor Francis Slay will veto the bill. The board would need 20 votes to override his veto.
