Ameren creates new transmission subsidiary

By St. Louis Public Radio

St. Louis, MO – St. Louis-based Ameren is creating a new subsidiary company to work on large-scale transmission projects.

Ameren introduced their Ameren Transmission Company, or ATX, Monday. The company is expected to pay for $1.3 billion worth of transmission infrastructure in Missouri and Illinois.

ATX will be one of the few transmission companies owned by a utility. ATX CEO Maureen Borkowski says the company will help Ameren reduce infrastructure costs and capitalize on a new market.

"The idea is that the transmission projects are being identified and approved by the regional transmission operator as needed," Borkowski said. "We want to be the ones that are in a position to build them when they're in our service territory."

Borkowski says the projects will also prepare Ameren for green energy advances in the future.

"One of the things these projects do is improve power transfer capability throughout the region," Borkowski said. "So that if generation dispatch patterns change due to environmental regulations, the system is still in a position to support that reliably."

Ameren has asked for federal approval for rate adjustments to pay for the transmission projects. The Federal Energy Regulatory Commission is expected to give Ameren an answer within the next 60 days.
