Ameren to cut another 50 jobs

By Rachel Lippmann

St. Louis – Ameren Corporation has announced another 50 layoffs.

The latest firings, all of non-union employees, bring the total number of job cuts at Ameren since July to 300.

The utility company is simply responding to market conditions, spokeswoman Susan Gallagher said.

"We've been faced with the same tough economic conditions as all our customers have, in terms of reduced use by particular industrial customers," she said.

Ameren cut 145 positions, not all of them filled, at its merchant generation business unit in July and August. Only 100 of the 350 employees who were eligible took a buyout in September and October. But the company never had a goal of how many they wanted to accept buyouts, Gallagher said. She could not say whether additional buyouts would have stopped the latest layoffs.
