St. Louis –

Archaeologists most often study the pre-historic past--digging into ancient Native American settlements, Egyptian tombs and other places where historic records are scant. A class from the University of Missouri-St. Louis is examining a more recent era.

They're excavating a site in Old North St. Louis where a 19th century house once stood to learn about the working-class immigrants who lived there, and what the future may hold for the neighborhood. KWMU's Matt Sepic visited the site, and put together this audio portrait.
