Army reservist faces discharge hearing after opposing wars

By Adam Allington, KWMU

St. Louis – A U.S Army reservist who refused to be reactivated last summer will face an administrative hearing in St. Louis Tuesday.

Sgt. Matthis Chiroux is a member of the Individual Ready Reserve, which consists of inactive military personnel.

After he refused to deploy last year, Chiroux said the Army informed him that he would be discharged for 'misconduct'.

"That was not acceptable with me," Chiroux said. "I wouldn't submit to me refusing to be party to what I consider a crime being described as an act of misconduct. So I went ahead and requested this hearing from them."

Chiroux said the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan are immoral and illegal.

The Army says the hearing before an administrative separation board is not a court marital.

Anti-war protesters plan to rally in support of Chiroux outside the hearing.
