Clayton, MO – Former Missouri Governor and U.S. Attorney General John Ashcroft says it's high time to consider possible criminal charges against British Petroleum and its subcontractors.

Ashcroft was in St. Louis on Wednesday to attend a fundraiser for Ed Martin, who's trying to win Russ Carnahan's congressional seat.

Ashcroft said the Obama administration should have responded more quickly in its investigation.

"They announced that they were examining criminal charges about 5-6 weeks after the event," said Ashcroft.

"If someone were to assault my family, I would expect them to start looking into the matter a little earlier than that."

Ashcroft also criticized the Obama Administration's decision to close the military detention facility in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba.
