Belleville Officials Looking for Lost Mail

(KWMU File Photo)

By AP/KWMU

Belleville, Ill. – Belleville's Treasurer, Mike Lundy, says Belleville city and postal workers are still trying to unravel the mystery of what happened to a batch of sewer bills.

Lundy says about 1,200 bills were mailed six weeks ago but never showed up at residents' homes. Replacements were mailed a couple of weeks later, and they are still missing, too.

Belleville residents say they noticed the problems about a week ago when they received notices in the mail that their bills were delinquent.

Spokeswoman Kim Yates of the U.S. Postal Service says the case is still under investigation. But she says so far the city has not been able to produce any proof that the missing bills were ever dropped off at a post office.
