Belleville Teachers Approve Contract; Avoid Strike

By Kevin Lavery, KWMU

St. Louis – High school teachers in Belleville are on the job this week after averting a walkout.

The teachers approved a new three-year contract early Monday morning, which was ratified Sunday night by the district's school board.

Neither side has released details yet.

A union spokesman says teachers are not happy with the deal, and only agreed to it to ensure school would start on time.

Brent Clark is Belleville District 201 superintendent.

"We're pleased to start school," Clark said. "We have some tremendous teachers and we have tremendous salary and benefits in our district, and we're real proud of not only what our district offers but our employees."

About 240 teachers had been negotiating with their district since last November. Classes begin Wednesday.
