Springfield, Ill – Illinois Governor Rod Blagojevich wants the state to monitor retail and wholesale gasoline prices to guard against price gouging.
The governor said Monday that's one way the state can address rising gasoline prices.
He wants the Department of Revenue to watch for unjustified price increases. If they find any, Blagojevich says the information will be sent Illinois Attorney General Lisa Madigan for further action.
Blagojevich also says he supports a measure sponsored by several lawmakers that would prohibit retailers and suppliers from using a state of emergency, such as a severe tornado, to increase gas prices.
The legislation would require gas prices to stay at the level they were seven days before an emergency happened.
The governor also wants state employees to use renewable fuels in state-owned vehicles whenever practical.
