Washington, D.C. – House Majority Whip Roy Blunt confirmed today he has early stage prostate cancer. And the Missouri Congressman says he'll have his prostate removed next month.
Blunt said the malignancy was found during routine screening, and was diagnosed in the early stages. The 53-year-old Springfield Republican said the cancer is unrelated to a cancerous tumor that prompted doctors to remove his left kidney last year.
Blunt said he's been extremely lucky to have excellent doctors in Springfield and Washington who encouraged him to get regular checkups and screenings. As a result, he says both cancers were caught early and appear easily treatable.
His surgery next month will be at the National Naval Medical Center in the Washington suburb of Bethesda, Maryland.
