Washington, DC – U.S. Senator Kit Bond says Missouri doesn't need early voting.
He's critical of a lawsuit filed by leaders including St. Louis Mayor Francis Slay. The lawsuit seeks to let Missourians vote anytime between October 19th and October 27th.
But Bond says the current system of absentee voting is adequate. Absentee voting is allowed starting six weeks before an election, but only for those who can't vote in person on Election Day. Those people who vote absentee also have to state a reason why they won't be able to vote on Election Day; early voting wouldn't require people to state a reason.
Democratic Congressman William Lacy Clay is urging Bond to support early voting after reading that Bond had trouble voting in last week's primary election.
Bond says the state should work to make absentee voting and voting on election day as easy as possible.
