Bond will vote for Sotomayor confirmation

By Bill Raack, KWMU

St. Louis, MO – U.S. Senator Kit Bond of Missouri will not join the majority of his fellow Republicans in opposing Supreme Court nominee Sonia Sotomayor.

Bond, who's retiring next year, says he'll vote to confirm her nomination. Bond would be one of just seven G-O-P senators who have said they'll support Sotomayor.

"I do not believe that the constitution tells me that I should refuse to support her merely because I disagree with her on some cases. I will support her. I'll be proud for her, the community she represents and the American dream she shows is possible," Bond said on the floor of the Senate on Wednesday.

Bond says that he may disagree with some of Sotomayor's rulings and statements, but that presidential elections have consequences and partisanship shouldn't determine his vote.

With no Democrats expected to oppose her, Sotomayor has more than enough support to be easily confirmed in a vote expected on Thursday.
