Cigarette Lawsuit Nears End in Metro-East
Edwardsville, Ill. – Closing arguments have started in a tobacco lawsuit in Madison County.
The Belleville News-Democrat reports prosecutors are expected to ask for $21 billion, saying the company defrauded Illinoisans over two light cigarettes. The lawsuit contends Phillip Morris knew smokers would just smoke more of them to get the same amount of nicotine and tar.
The News-Democrat also reports if Phillip Morris loses the case, it plans to appeal to the U.S. Supreme Court, if needed.
