City recycling pickup brings new fee

By Adam Allington, St. Louis Public Radio

St. Louis – Many St. Louis City residents have just received their first bill for the city's new trash and recycling fee.

The $11 monthly charge will pay for the trash and refuse services that the city already offers. But it also covers a new city-wide recycling pickup program.

St. Louis City Streets Director Todd Waelterman "single stream" recycling dumpsters do not require any pre-sorting.

"All of your recycling in one package," Waelterman said. "You put your newspapers in there, your plastic, your glass, your aluminum, and then we pick it up together."

Waelterman said the new blue dumpsters will be placed in alleys as well as 27 drop off sites around the city.

He says the city will be continually adding more dumpsters.
