City schools resolve some lead paint problems, but windows will wait

By AP/KWMU

St. Louis – The St. Louis public school district has resolved some lead-paint problems at 25 elementary schools, but not all the work has been done in time for the start of classes Thursday.

District spokesman Patrick Wallace said about $420,000 has been spent on lead-paint abatement in school rooms used by children 6 and under.

Young children are the most at risk for health problems from ingesting lead paint chips or dust.

The project also called for replacing windows, but bids for that work came in higher than expected.

Wallace said if the school board approves a new bid next month, windows could be installed safely during the school year whenever children are not present.
