Civil suit filed in highly publicized Mo. raid

By AP/St. Louis Public Radio

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. –

A civil suit has been filed in connection to a February drug raid that led to the shooting death of a homeowner's dog.

The Columbia Daily Tribune reported that the suit was filed Monday in federal court in Jefferson City against the city of Columbia and 13 other defendants.

There was a public outcry over the botched February raid when video of it was posted on the Internet. The video shows SWAT officers approach the family's home, announce they are serving a warrant, break down the door and almost immediately fire shots.

The dogs' owner, 25-year-old Jonathan Whitworth, was arrested on misdemeanor marijuana charges while his wife and 7-year-old stepson watched.

Police said they had been tipped he was a major distributor but found only a small amount of marijuana and drug paraphernalia.
