Close Democratic AG's race could mean recount

By Maria Hickey, KWMU

St. Louis, MO. – It could be a while before the results of the Democratic Attorney General primary race are official.

State senator Chris Koster declared victory with a less than one percent lead over state senator Margaret Donnelly.

Donnelly has not conceded the race, but her campaign has not officially asked for a recount.

Secretary of State spokeswoman Laura Egerdal (egg' er dahl) says recounts are not done until after the election is certified.

Egerdal says the state must Secretary of State's office must do that by August 26.

"After the election has been officially certified, at that point any candidate who has lost by less than one percent can request a recount," Egerdal said.

The candidate must request a recount within seven days of the election's certification.

Egerdal says the state pays for a recount.
