Comedian, St. Louis Native Greg Warren Talks Comedic Process Ahead Of Funny Bone Appearance

St. Louis native and comedian Greg Warren talked about his comedic approach on Wednesday's "St. Louis on the Air."

Last year, St. Louis native and comedian Greg Warren tried a new approach in his comedy career by adding an all-ages family show. He will do the same this year as he returns to St. Louis this week for his appearances at the Funny Bone comedy club in Maryland Heights.

On Wednesday’s St. Louis on the Air, host Don Marsh talked with Warren about his comedic approach and upcoming shows.

When asked where he gets his comedic material from, Warren said it’s about noticing things around him.

“I sort of have a process … where I sit down and journal,” he explained. “It’s really hard to sit down and say, ‘What’s funny?’ But if you can start with what interrupted the continuum of the day, what happened over the last three days that seems a little different than things that usually happen – a lot of times, you can turn that into [something] funny.”

He added that usually the thought of a joke is funny, but skilled comedians perfect it by learning how to explain it.

“I learned that somewhere in the middle of my career [that] if you have an idea, it’s funny – trust your instincts – it’s funny,” Warren said. “It may take you a while to figure out how to explain that and have them see what you see …but I think over time you get a little more skilled.”

Warren will perform this weekend and put some of his new material to the test. On Sunday, kids will have the chance to test out their jokes as well during the special all-ages show.

“Last year was the first time I tried [the all-ages show] in any market,” he said. “It was great and better than what I would have expected.”
