Committees, Missouri Senate to hear Ford legislation

By AP/St. Louis Public Radio

Jefferson City, Mo. – Missouri lawmakers are to begin the real work today in their special session on automaker incentives and state employee pensions.

Their special session started Thursday, but few lawmakers attended. But today, House committee meetings are scheduled, and the Senate hears the retirement legislation.

The manufacturing bill would offer up to $150 million a year in tax incentives for automakers and their suppliers. To qualify, they must improve their factories and keep employees on the job.

The main target is the Ford assembly plant near Kansas City.

To pay for the tax breaks, lawmakers want to require new state workers to delay retirement and contribute part of their pay toward their pension funds
