County Library Board Keeps Tax Rate the Same

By Matt Sepic, KWMU

St. Louis, MO – Library taxes are staying put in St. Louis County. The Library Board Monday kept the tax rate the same for property taxpayers, even though they could have raised it without needing voter approval.

Assistant Director George Durnell says the current tax rate brings in enough money.

"Voters authorized a tax ceiling of $0.18 and we collect $0.14," he said. "We are one of the few institutions in this state-though not the only one-that does not collect its full voted tax."

Durnell also says even though the tax rate isn't changing, the library will get about $1 million more this year because county land is worth more.

Those who wanted a tax increase say the library's budget is stretched to the limit.
