Dale the Ox Dies

By AP/KWMU

Columbia, MO – An ox that fell down a ravine at Lewis and Clark festivities last week in St. Charles is dead.

Dale the ox was euthanized Monday at the University of Missouri College of Veterinary Medicine in Columbia.

Firefighters helped rescue the 13-year old, 2,500 pound ox after he couldn't climb back up the ravine near the Missouri River last Wednesday. He had been mired in muck for hours.

The animal was owned by Gary Barker of Edmonton, Ky.

The cause of death was undetermined but a spinal fracure was suspected as a contributing factor. An autopsy is planned.
