'Dewey Defeats Truman' Redux

By AP/KWMU

New York – It was a big headline and an "exclusive" story -- but it was also wrong. The New York Post reported Tuesday that Democratic presidential candidate John Kerry would pick Congressman Dick Gephardt as his running mate.

The headline read "Kerry's Choice" over what the paper touted as an "exclusive" story, which ran without a reporter's name linked to it. There was also a file photo of Gephardt and Kerry together.

Kerry announced this morning that he's picked North Carolina Senator John Edwards as his running mate.

The Post's chief editor is apologizing to readers for the story, which he says was based on information that turned out to be wrong. He didn't give details.

The paper's Web site replaced the Gephardt report with a story by The Associated Press on Kerry's actual choice.
