Disability rights group demands better sidewalks

By Bill Raack, KWMU

St. Louis – A disability rights group will hold a vigil Thursday in honor of a St. Louis woman who was struck by a car and killed while in her wheelchair a year ago.

Lisi Bansen was heading home along Delmar Boulevard in the city when the accident occurred.

Paraquad says she was traveling in the street because the sidewalks in that area were not, and still are not, accessible for those with disabilities.

Andrew Lackey with Paraquad says poor sidewalks in the city are a public safety problem for everyone.

"That affects the ability for folks to, for instance, to take strollers and even people who can walk," Lackey said. "Lisi Bansen used a wheelchair but people who can walk sometimes will trip and fall and be injured."

Calls to the city streets department have not been returned.

Paraquad's vigil will be held at 6 p.m. Thursday in the 2600 block of Delmar, between Jefferson and Beaumont.
