By AP/KWMU

St. Louis – Officials at Cardinal Glennon Children's Hospital in St. Louis say a 16-year-old boy brought in this week weighing just 40 pounds has been upgraded from critical to serious but stable condition.

Doctors and nurses are slowly re-hydrating and nourishing the boy.One pediatrician says this was the most dramatic case of starvation she's ever seen.

The boy is from Michigan. He's mentally retarded, prone to seizures and has cerebral palsy.

A St. Louis judge yesterday granted Missouri custody of the child. Authorities are investigating.
