Off-Duty Cop Shoots Suspect

By AP/KWMU

St. Louis, MO – An off-duty St. Louis police officer Thursday shot a man he says tried to run him down with a car. The officer was working security at a city library branch.

Police are still looking for another suspect.

Police said the sergeant ordered a suspect to stop when he saw him try to break into a car. They said the suspect instead fled to a waiting car.

Police said the driver of that vehicle then charged the off-duty officer. The sergeant fired into the oncoming car, wounding the driver. The other suspect fled the scene.

St. Louis Police Chief Joe Mokwa said the shooting initially appears to be justified.

The driver had non-life-threatening injuries to his shoulder.
