DVD Software Maker Appeals Anti-Piracy Ruling

By AP/KWMU

St. Louis – A Missouri maker of DVD-copying products appeals court rulings in New York and California that it stop making and marketing its software.

321 Studios filed the challenges in U.S. appeals courts in the two states where federal judges have ruled the questioned software illegal.

Those judges have ordered the Chesterfield company to stop marketing the software, ruling it violates federal law barring circumvention of anti-piracy measures used to protect DVDs.

The company since has shipped retooled versions, removing a built-in tool for descrambling movies.

The company says its products merely give consumers fair use of the movies they've bought, including backing up expensive copies of children's movies in case the originals get scratched.
