St. Louis – 129 years to the day after it was first dedicated, the Eads Bridge is now open again.
The top deck closed for repairs in 1991, and reopened to bicycles and pedestrians Friday.
Marching bands and cyclists met dignitaries from Missouri and Illinois on the state line halfway across the bridge for the rededication.
St. Louis Mayor Francis Slay says the structure's reopening is a proud moment for the region.
"129 years ago this bridge was an architectural marvel, and it was a symbol of the commitment of the people of St. Louis to make this city a very great city."
Vehicles will be allowed on the Eads Bridge starting Monday.
The bridge was designed by self-educated engineer James Buchanan Eads, and first opened on July 4, 1874.
