Embryonic stem cell opponents: Battle is just starting

By Kelly Weiss, KCUR

Kansas City, MO – After Missouri voters narrowly passed Amendment 2 on Tuesday, opponents say they are not giving up and the fight is just beginning.

The measure will protect federally approved stem cell research from being criminalized by state lawmakers (including embryonic stem cell research).

"The people who came to the polls in masses to vote against this are not going to simply give up," said Sen. Matt Bartle, a Kansas City area Republican. "It hasn't worked that way on the abortion issue and it's not going to work that way on this issue.'

Bartle added the vote sparked a 'prairie fire' under those in the pro-life movement.

Bartle says there are two ways opponents to Amendment 2 can fight its passage, either by legally challenging it in the courts or asking voters to repeal the very amendment they just approved this week.
