Environmentalists May Sue EPA over Clean Water

St. Louis, Mo. – An environmental group says it intends to sue the Environmental Protection Agency, saying the agency hasn't done enough to improve water quality in Missouri.

The Missouri Coalition for the Environment is giving the EPA 60 days to implement water quality standards required by the Clean Water Act.

The coalition's Ted Heisel says the Clean Water Act requires all state waters to be safe for swimming, but 90-percent of the state's lakes and rivers are currently unsafe.

"So what we're concerned about is that many of the smaller creeks and rivers in the state of Missouri where kids play in the summertime actually have dangerous levels of bacteria in them," Heisel said.

Officials with the EPA said they could not comment until they have consulted with the agency's attorneys.
