St. Louis – A fake pipe bomb accidentally left on a Metro bus after a terrorism training exercise Thursday night caused a scare at a bus maintenance facility early Friday.

A driver who did not know about the training session alerted authorities after finding the device just after 4 a.m. at a garage in the Skinker-DeBalivere area.

The garage was evacuated and the St. Louis police bomb squad disposed of the device.

Metro spokeswoman Dianne Williams said the driver acted properly, but someone should have done a better job cleaning up yesterday.

"They use a pipe with wires attached to it to make sure that people recognize what a suspicious package looks like and how to properly respond," Williams said. "So even though the people this morning didn't know that's what they were looking at, their training worked."

Williams said buses in the area were put back on the road once the situation was resolved.
