Jefferson City, Mo. – As Missouri students get set to return to classrooms, there's concern that some school districts may get little to no money this year from the $26 billion spending bill signed this week by President Obama.
The St. Louis Post-Dispatch is reporting that schools in more financially well-off districts may get none of the $189 million being sent to Missouri. One of those districts, Lindbergh, recently laid off 35 teachers.
Governor Jay Nixon says his office is still evaluating the requirements on how and where the money can be spent.
"As I understand it, it's money that will eventually be run through the (school funding) formula, so the proportions of dollars as set out by the...formula will probably replicate in essence where (those) dollars go," Nixon said.
Schools with higher poverty rates and lower property tax collections would get most of the $189 million dollars, based on both federal and state guidelines.
Meanwhile, the Kansas City school district this week announced that it's laying off 175 teachers, just two weeks before students there return to class.
