Federal Help for Laid Off Airline Workers

By K. Lavery, KWMU

St. Charles, Missouri – US Labor Secretary Elaine Chao Friday announced two federal grants totaling close to $4 million to help displaced airline industry workers in Missouri. The money will be used for job search assistance, placement and training.

George Price is with the Association of Professional Flight Attendants, which represents thousands of furloughed American Airlines employees.

He says though workers are eligible to take advantage of job retraining programs, they still have the choice to come back to American if the airline recalls them within five years.

Since October 2001, more than 1,500 St. Louis-based flight attendants have been furloughed.
