Fenton plant to reopen briefly

By Maria Altman, KWMU

St. Louis, MO. – Chrysler announced Wednesday that seven plants, including the North Assembly Plant in Fenton, will reopen June 29.

But the plant is still slated for closure by the end of September, along with the South Assembly Plant.

Chrysler spokeswoman Dianna Gutierrez says the company chose to re-open plants based on demand.

"We reopened the seven facilities out of a volume need or a market demand need, so that that particular facility is up and running for that reason," Gutierrez said.

The reopening appears to have no affect on the planned closure of the plant. Gutierrez said she had new announcements about the closure of the north plant.

The traditional mid-summer idling will still take place for two weeks beginning July 13th.

Chrysler closed all its assembly plants May 4 during bankruptcy proceedings. Last week the company completed an alliance with Fiat and emerged from bankruptcy.
