Flags lowered in Mo. for WWI veteran
Flags are being lowered in Missouri for the last surviving American to serve in World War I.
Missouri native Frank Buckles died Sunday at the age of 110 at his farm in West Virginia. He was born in the Harrison County town of Bethany and also lived as a child in Vernon County.
Buckles lied about his age to enlist in the Army and served during the war in England and France.
Gov. Jay Nixon has ordered flags lowered through March 8 at state buildings in Harrison and Vernon counties, and at the National World War I Museum in Kansas City.
Nixon also ordered flags lowered on state buildings in all 114 counties and the city of St. Louis on the day of Buckle's funeral at Arlington National Cemetery. The date will be announced later.
