General Relief Cuts Take Effect Saturday

By H. Wicai, KWMU

St. Louis, MO –

About 9,600 Missourians who receive General Relief are close to being cut off. The $80 check they receive each month will be reduced - starting February 1 - to $9 a month. And Governor Holden wants to eliminate the payments altogether in July.

Social service agencies say General Relief prevents homelessness. But can $80 really keep a person off the streets?

KWMU's Hillary Wicai prepared this report.
