GM to eliminate nearly 900 from Wentzville plant

By Associated Press

Wentzville, MO – About 900 workers at the General Motors Corp. plant in Wentzville are facing indefinite layoffs later this summer.

GM said Monday it will cut one of two production shifts in Wentzville in August. GM spokesman Chris Lee says market demand for the GMC Savana and Chevrolet Express vans manufactured in Wenzville has declined dramatically.

Lee says workers will be called back if and when demand improves, but there is no time frame for a return to work.

The news comes just a week after GM filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy and announced plans to close or idle a dozen other plants nationwide.

GM employs about 1,900 people in Wentzville, about 40 miles west of St. Louis.
